First HAWK Crossing has landed in El Mirage

[El Mirage, AZ March 30, 2017] - The City of El Mirage turned on the very first HAWK (High intensity Activated crossWalK) crossing signal at the intersection of Cactus Road and 127th Avenue yesterday afternoon and more HAWK crossings are planned this year.  Future crossings will follow on El Mirage Road at Soledad Street and on Thunderbird Road at both Primrose Street and Luna Street.

HAWK crossings are designed to allow pedestrians to cross more heavily traveled roadways, but only stop traffic as needed.  This provides both safety and efficiency for those traveling through the City by foot or vehicle.

The signals associated with a HAWK crossing has two red faces on top and one yellow face at the bottom.  The signal will be dark when there is no pedestrian traffic, but once an individual presses the push button to cross, the signal will flash yellow and then become solid yellow to warn drivers to slow down and prepare to stop.

The signal will show two solid reds to stop all vehicular traffic and let the pedestrians cross.  After a predetermined length of time, the red faces will flash letting the drivers know that they may proceed through the crossing if there is no one in the crosswalk, and then the signal will turn dark again. A visual representative is shown below and a video is available on the City’s website.

More information on the HAWK Crossing is available on the City’s website at www.elmirageaz.gov or please contact Bryce Christo, Civil Engineer II, at 623-876-2974/bchristo@elmirageaz.gov.
