07/20/12 - El Mirage Garden a Model of Community Collaborations

The recent activity at the El Mirage Community Garden has piqued the interest of more than a few passersby. Garden boxes of multi-colored bricks, a long pathway from the entrance to the garden’s center, and perimeter fencing accented by gabion baskets are among the new elements transforming the once vacant lot at El Mirage and Thunderbird Roads into a local destination. Much of the garden’s progress is the result of individuals and organizations who came forward with one request, “How can we help”? According to City Manager Spencer Isom, “The response to the garden has been extraordinary. We are excited to create a space where fresh produce and new friendships can prosper.”

El Mirage seniors have taken a particular interest in the garden, since several grew up on area farms. Summer temperatures have not deterred their enthusiasm for planting squash, tomatoes, and cilantro for harvesting later in the season. The City continues to add new garden boxes, which can be leased yearly for a nominal fee. A special garden section for children is also in the works, along with a farmers’ market slated for start-up this fall.
