Health Advisory for the City of El Mirage

Due to the Mulch Fire burning in Maricopa County, wind shifts are causing smoke over the City.  Advising residents to limit activities outside, particularly those with respiratory problems.

Maricopa County Mulch Fire Update
mulch.jpg

The mulch fire is not in the City of El Mirage.  The mulch fire is burning in an unincorporated area of Maricopa County adjacent to the City of Glendale near Olive Avenue and Dysart Road. This is Rural Metro Fire Department jurisdiction.

El Mirage Fire Department is in daily contact with the Rural Metro Fire Department. The latest report as of 11/25/2014 is the property owner has enlisted the help of a private company to help mitigate the hazard. The property owner has established no less than three separate sprinkler type systems in the hopes that this tactic will prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding unburned fuels.  Meanwhile, heavy bulldozer type equipment is being used to push and extinguish the material that is burning back into the 25 acre pit, once this is complete they will be able to flood/drown the area.

The material that is burning is your everyday yard clippings and landscape materials such as grass and palm fronds. This particular site is massive, tall, wide, and tightly packed which is adding to the difficulty of extinguishment. Unfortunately, these types of events do take a great deal of time to extinguish.

For more information concerning the mulch fire, please contact Colin Williams from Rural Metro at (480) 627-6200 or .

El Mirage road project gets a green light

 Grand Ave and Thunderbird Rd

An aerial photo from ADOT shows the scope of work planned to rework the series of intersections near Grand Avenue and Thunderbird and Thompson Ranch roads.

A project to improve the Grand Avenue intersection at Thunderbird and Thompson Ranch roads in El Mirage has been given an environmental green light from the Federal Highway Administration.

Work is scheduled to start by the fall of 2015 on the project that would shift the Thunderbird Road connection to Grand Avenue so that it directly aligns with Thompson Ranch Road, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
